In November 2020, Adeso, the Alliance for Peacebuilding, Peace Direct, and Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS) hosted a three-day online consultation on racism, discrimination, and other forms of bias in international development, humanitarian aid, and peacebuilding. We combined the findings from that initial consultation, as well as the findings from some complementary region-specific Zoom calls, to produce a report titled ‘Time to Decolonise the Aid System.’ With an emphasis on the perspectives of local practitioners, this report examines the manifestations of structural racism, the implications of language, and presents recommendations for donors, INGOs, and individual practitioners in the Global North on how to ensure their efforts are equitable, sustainable, and locally-led. As the United States confronts the conflicts experienced domestically, Peace Direct is eager to see how these findings can inform domestic peacebuilding efforts.
