Protests, Police, and Preventing Violence
How can communities and civil society organizations make the best decisions for their contexts? What steps can they take, including how can or should they work with the police and what are the alternatives to working with the police? Join a discussion with experts in those fields.
TRUST Network organizational Partners Nonviolent Peaceforce and Police2Peace will provide this presentation, together with consulting partner Maria Stephan. Mel Duncan is a co-founder of Nonviolent Peaceforce, currently working in Minneapolis to see how lessons we have learned about protecting civilians and preventing violence in places like Iraq and South Sudan can apply at home. Frank McCrary of the Service Employees International Union local 26 will join Mel. They are working together on civilian community safety and security projects in Minneapolis. Frank has lived and worked on the Northside of Minneapolis throughout his life. Chief Jim Bueermann (ret.), was President of the National Police Foundation (non-partisan, non-profit police research) and brings 40 years of experience to his work with local and national community and advocacy groups, bureaucrats and politicians on police reform and other policing issues. Lisa Broderick is Executive Director of Police2Peace, a national, nonpartisan nonprofit organization that is bringing a new framework of community policing rooted in PEACE OFFICER to police agencies across the country. Dr. Maria J. Stephan, co-author of Why Civil Resistance Works, is an expert on violent/non-violent conflict who trains and advises activists, policy/NGO leaders, and federal workers on nonviolent strategies.
