Understanding Critical Infrastructure Attacks: Recent Events in North Carolina
There have been three attacks on electricity substations in North Carolina that may be a sign of an accelerationist-motivated domestic extremist threat.
The Incidents
In December 2022, there were coordinated attacks on two electrical substations in Moore County, North Carolina (WSOC-TV, 2023). These attacks resulted in significant power outages affecting around 45,000 customers. The incidents were notable due to the use of firearms to disable the substations, causing extensive damage to equipment and infrastructure.
